With charcoal or marker on drawing or tracing paper make sketches of each of the following subject nouns using gestures, automatic shapes and scribbles, the abstract/analogous method of representation. Do not use 3D illusions, no images, no symbols or words only gestures and marks.

1. Anger
2. Happiness
3. Anxiety
4. Peacefulness
5. Loneliness
6. Playful
7. Depression
8. Powerful
9. Femininity
10. Masculinity

Choose the best visual representation of each of the abstract analogies, consolidate and synthesize the idea and render it with black marker and/or black ink on 4" x 4" squares of Bristol board. The final appearance of your presentation is most important. Erase pencil guidelines. Clean up black marker errors with Pro-white or white gouache.

When developing your drawing, consider the Primary Qualities. Your composition can be open or closed but it cannot extend physically beyond the frame. Be aware of the negative space/shape in the individual composition within each square.

The Primary Qualities:
Number or quantity of elements
Figure or shape of forms
Magnitude or size relationships
Position or placement and orientation on picture plane
Motion or direction, actual or implied

You can develop your representations using these elements:
Points
Lines
Shapes can be curvilinear, rectilinear, empty, filled, open, closed, etc.
Hexagons and or circles
Spirals or radials
Branching patterns
Meandering lines

Scan final developed tracings or finished Bristol drawings into the computer, Live Trace the images and Expand them. Make any adjustments deemed necessary and save into a file.

For digital layout
Prepare two standard class layouts with 8 squares on two panels, with four 4" x 4" squares on each panel, a 1" gap between each and a 2" wide border at the sides and top and 3" border at the bottom. Print your name and Andreu 2D in two lines with 1/3" high block letters on the bottom right corner of the board. Text should be centered vertically with a 2" margin from the right.
Select, Copy and Paste the images on the two laid-out boards. Do not title them. The idea should be conveyed visually and should be obvious. They should be laid out from left to right in sequence in two rows and two columns, 1,2, and 3,4 on one panel and 5,6, and 7,8 on the other. Save 9 and 10 for later. They will be used in another assignment.

For physical layout
Print out the images to scale, 4" x 4", on copy paper, 8.5" x 11", and cut and paste them on the two laid-out Bristol boards. Do not title them. The idea should be conveyed visually and should be obvious. They should be laid out from left to right in sequence in two rows and two columns, 1,2, and 3,4 on one panel and 5,6, and 7,8 on the other. Save 9 and 10 for later. They will be used in another assignment.
